Apples are one of the most popular types of fruit here. Granny Smith was first bred in the late 19th century by Australian breeders. These apples are characterised by a sharp, sweet and tart flavour. Fresh apples are pleasantly crunchy and, thanks to their firmness, are ideal for cooking as they retain their shape. The skin is firm and deep green; it is rarely lighter in colour, though it may occasionally show a slight brownish-red tinge on the sun-exposed side. The apples are used for tanning, baking, drying for tea and eating fresh.
