🧑🍳 Uses and tips
✔️ Sushi and Japanese dishes: the perfect choice for makizushi, nigiri or onigiri – after cooking, add rice vinegar, sugar and salt for an authentic flavour.
✔️ Side dish: suitable as a basic side dish for meat, fish or vegetables.
✔️ Salads and bowl dishes: you can also use it in poke bowls or Asian salads.
✔️ Shaping: thanks to its stickiness, it shapes well into balls and rolls.
🥢 Preparation – basic method
-
Rinse the rice thoroughly under cold water until the water runs clear.
-
The ratio of water to rice is usually 2:1 (e.g. 2 pots of water to 1 pot of rice).
-
Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and cook, covered, for approx. 10–15 min.
-
Once cooked, leave to stand for 10 minutes so that the rice ‘dries out’ properly and fully absorbs the liquid.
🧊 Storage
Store in a dry, cool place away from direct light to ensure the rice retains its quality and does not become damp. It will keep for a long time in a sealed container.
💡 Tip: If you’re making sushi, season the rice with rice vinegar, a little sugar and salt only after it has been cooked. This will give it the traditional sweet-and-sour flavour typical of sushi.
